How much does a software engineer in California make a year?

I am planning to become a Software Engineer in the future, and I was wondering just what they do. I looked around a couple of places and has varied from 50k to 80k a year. I 'm. not really sure what you do. If you are a Software Engineer Please tell me what you do. I was hoping to work for google, if that helps at all.

I don't know about in Cali but generally right out of undergrad Comp Sci majors generally making about 60k their first year. And it only goes up!
You don't really make the big bucks until you have people doing the software engineering for YOU.
